These certifications are issued by the Project Management Institute and are the global gold standard of Project Management certifications.

The certifications are slightly different and are detailed below.

The PMP or Project Management Professional certification is a global industry-recognized credential for project managers. PMP demonstrates the experience, education, skill, and competency required to lead and direct projects. PMP is the most sought-after certification administered by the Project Management Institute. The PMP focuses on doing the projects right.

The PfMP or Portfolio Management Professional is PMI’s top-ranking certification and the most difficult to achieve. The PfMP is more strategic in nature and it signifies an advanced competency in the coordinated management of one or more portfolios to achieve strategic objectives by the execution of the right projects at the right time. The PfMP focuses on doing the right projects, the right time.

Organizations with mature project portfolio management practices complete 35 percent more of their programs and projects successfully. They fail less often and waste less money according to the 2015 thought leadership report, Delivering on Strategy: The Power of Project Portfolio Management.

There are less than 2,000 PfMP holders across the world.
